Social Networking

Social networking has been very popular online because the internet is filled with millions of people who are looking to meet new friends, to get information, and just to find jobs. When it comes to these kinds of things, the most preferable things would be social networking websites. MySpace and Facebook have been very popular over the past years and these are the sites where recruiters have been looking for people to hire to work. In the article “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting” by Frank Langfitt, “social networking technology is absolutely the best thing to happen to recruiting-ever”.

It has other benefits besides giving people a chance to work. Society can put thoughts, experience, and expertise from around the world together within social networking. With their opinions, companies can use it for software developments or product designs (“What’s Next? Your Future in Social Networking”). Although these websites have their good aspects, they do have a “dark side” and that would be the invasion of privacy. Privacy is the most important thing when it comes to social networking. It has been an issue especially with Facebook because a lot of strangers can figure out where you live, where you currently are, or any of your other personal information. If these information is leaked to the wrong person, it can lead to bad consequences.

I believe that in the future with the help of social networking, people wouldn’t literally have to go into work and every body can work from home. Some companies already allow their employees to work at home but I’m considering everyone to be able to do the same. Each specific company can have their own personal websites to do what has to be done and that website can have their little own chat room if needed.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Blogs and wikis are written by regular people just like us. They provide ways to share information on a site without requiring any expertise. They also make it easier for people to update than a traditional website.  In today’s networking world, mostly everyone is on the internet writing about something on blogs or wikis. By having people expressing their opinions on these pages, they will find others that have the same opinion as they do which will lead to collaboration. An example of this would be in an article written by Michael Wilson, titled “Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid”. A group of seven people met through a blog and came together, which led to the arrest of three brothers for drugs and weapons.

However, there are also many differences between blogs and wikis. The main difference is that blogs are owned by one individual and he/she are the only ones who can add/edit posts. If anyone wants to give an idea, they have to leave a comment. On the other hand, wikis are always updated by many people around the world and multiple users can create or change the content. According to “Wikipedia”, wikis are created collaboratively and are powered by wiki software. A new use for a wiki that has not been done yet would to be able to post videos to support what the page is talking about. By having a video, it can show audiences or anyone who visits that page things that a video can express that words can’t.

eBay has been an American multinational online auction since 1995 in which consumers and businesses buy and sell a variety of goods worldwide. It has become a multi-billion dollar business where over 30 countries are able to access to this online auction. With this being said, eBay is a community because consumers sell their goods to seek and gain a profit. Yes, eBay allows sellers to donate a portion of their auction to charity but it isn’t mandatory, thus majority of the sellers use this website to have an interest to gain a profit. Consumers can communicate and leave comments over the web on the product they want to buy or sell which allows people from different locations to interact with each other. This can all be done at home, at work, or any places that has a computer.
